In 2005, NCSoft introduced one of the most influential updates in Lineage II's history: C4 – Heirs of Destiny. This article revisits the original Korean announcement, preserving the information and vision that players first saw when the update was revealed.
A New Era Begins
The Heirs of Destiny update presented a world filled with new opportunities, challenges, and paths for character progression. Players were encouraged to push beyond their limits and explore a rapidly expanding world.
The Noblesse System
One of the centerpiece features of C4 was the introduction of the Noblesse system. Nobles were portrayed as exceptional individuals who transcended the traditional boundaries of race and class.
Becoming a Noble granted access to special privileges and opened the door to competing among the most powerful players in the game.
The Grand Olympiad and Heroes
The update introduced the Grand Olympiad, a competitive PvP system designed exclusively for Nobles who had completed their third class transfer.
Players would battle opponents of the same class in intense arena combat, competing for the prestigious title of Hero. A total of 31 Heroes could exist at one time, representing each class in the game.
Heroes received unique rewards, including exclusive weapons and special visual effects that displayed their heroic status throughout the world.
Goddard Castle
C4 expanded the political landscape with the introduction of Goddard Castle, the first castle located in the kingdom of Elmore.
Built among rugged terrain, the fortress was designed to provide strong defensive advantages and served as a strategic outpost against threats from Aden. Its isolated position contributed to its historically tense relationships with neighboring regions.
New Activities and Exploration
The update added several new ways for players to spend their time:
Fishing system
Traveler's Guild NPCs in major cities
New quests
New territories to explore
Additional clan hideouts
Resort areas and recreational locations
These additions offered both casual and competitive players more content beyond traditional hunting and PvP.
Raising the Level Cap
Players who had previously reached level 75 could now continue progressing.
New hunting grounds were introduced in the regions of Goddard and Rune, providing high-level content designed for characters seeking greater challenges and rewards.
Third Profession Transfer
Characters reaching level 76 gained access to their third profession transfer, allowing every class to unlock new abilities and significantly increase its combat potential.
This progression system became one of the defining features of high-level gameplay in Lineage II.
New Equipment and Items
C4 introduced a wide range of new equipment and consumables, including:
S-Grade weapons
S-Grade armor
S-Grade accessories
Additional options for A-Grade accessories
Village return scrolls
Blessed weapon enchant scrolls
Blessed armor enchant scrolls
These additions expanded character customization and endgame progression.
Skills and Interface Improvements
The update also brought quality-of-life improvements:
New skills for multiple classes
Skill enhancement systems
Redesigned user interface
Movable chat windows
Separate chat tabs for clan, alliance, trade, party, and general communication
These changes made gameplay and communication more convenient than ever before.
Raid Boss Rework
Raid Boss encounters were redesigned to provide a greater variety of challenges and improve the overall raid experience for players and clans.
Character Customization
C4 expanded cosmetic options with the addition of:
New hair accessories
Wedding dresses
These items gave players more ways to personalize their characters.
The City of Rune
The update introduced Rune, a city with a rich economic history.
Once a major center of manufacturing and trade, Rune prospered through commerce with Gracia and neighboring regions. However, as maritime and overland trade routes declined, the city's economic importance gradually faded.
Despite this decline, Rune became one of the most significant new locations added in the Heirs of Destiny update.
A Landmark Update
The C4: Heirs of Destiny update marked a major turning point in Lineage II's evolution. With the introduction of the Noblesse system, Grand Olympiad, third profession transfers, higher level progression, new regions, and powerful equipment, it laid the foundation for much of the game's future endgame content.
More than two decades later, Heirs of Destiny remains one of the most memorable and influential updates in Lineage II history.
