On October 26, 2005, NCSoft released Lineage II C4: Scions of Destiny on Korean servers. At a time when the game was facing increasing competition, declining player numbers, and growing issues with bots and inflation, the update arrived as one of the most ambitious expansions in the game's history.
Although C4 did not completely reverse the game's declining population, it introduced so much content and so many memorable features that many players still consider it the greatest version of Lineage II ever released.
The State of Lineage II Before C4
By late 2005, Lineage II had already achieved worldwide success, but warning signs were beginning to appear. Since the release of Chronicle 2, player numbers had gradually declined, servers were closing in some regions, and World of Warcraft was rapidly becoming the dominant MMORPG.
Despite these challenges, thousands of dedicated players remained loyal to Lineage II, eagerly waiting for the next major update.
New Territories: Rune and Goddard
One of the most significant additions in C4 was the opening of the northern lands beyond Aden.
Players gained access to two new cities:
Rune Township
Goddard
Both locations had been planned long before release and were referenced in earlier game lore and NPC dialogues.
Several concepts originally intended for these regions never made it into the final game. Early designs included flying ships in Rune and additional locations such as the Goddard Mine and Valakaya Village. While these ideas were ultimately abandoned, the new territories greatly expanded the world of Lineage II.
New Hunting Zones and the Arrival of Valakas
C4 introduced numerous high-level hunting areas that quickly became fan favorites:
Valley of Saints
Forest of the Dead
Forge of the Gods
Hot Springs
The most important addition was the introduction of Valakas, the Fire Dragon and one of the game's most iconic Epic Bosses.
At the time, many players expected Fafurion, the Water Dragon, to appear next due to earlier lore references. Instead, NCSoft surprised the community with Valakas, further expanding the game's dragon storyline.
Valakas quickly became one of the most challenging encounters in Lineage II and a major objective for powerful alliances.
The Ketra Orcs and Varka Silenos Conflict
One of C4's most memorable storylines centered around the war between the Ketra Orcs and the Varka Silenos.
According to the game's lore, both tribes claimed ownership of the lands near Goddard. The Varka tribe had been promised territory for assisting Elmore during wartime, while the Ketra Orcs viewed the region as ancestral land that rightfully belonged to them.
Players could choose to ally with either faction, complete quests, and gradually increase their standing. These alliances became an important part of character progression and helped bring the world to life through meaningful faction-based conflict.
Third Class Transfers and Character Progression
C4 introduced the highly anticipated Third Profession system.
Players who reached level 76 could complete challenging quests to unlock powerful new abilities that dramatically changed PvP and endgame gameplay.
Additional progression features included:
Skill enchanting
Blessed weapon and armor scrolls
A-grade accessory crafting
S-grade weapons and armor
The introduction of S-grade equipment represented the pinnacle of power at the time. Acquiring these items required significant effort, organization, and resources, making them prestigious symbols of achievement.
Clan Wars Become More Meaningful
One of the update's most important changes involved the clan war system.
Previously, clan conflicts were limited and often lacked meaningful consequences. C4 expanded the system significantly:
Up to 30 active clan wars
One-sided war declarations
Reduced experience penalties for participants
Greater incentives for PvP
These changes created more opportunities for conflict and reinforced one of Lineage II's defining characteristics: player-driven warfare.
Epic Jewelry and Endgame Competition
C4 also introduced Epic Jewelry as some of the most valuable items in the game.
Control of Epic Bosses became a major objective for powerful alliances. Massive battles involving hundreds of players erupted over access to bosses and their rare rewards.
This system intensified competition and created unforgettable moments, but it also widened the gap between elite clans and ordinary players. Even so, many fans consider these epic struggles to be the essence of Lineage II.
Noblesse and the Olympiad
Another landmark feature was the introduction of the Noblesse System.
Players who completed a long series of quests and leveled a subclass to 75 could become Nobles.
This achievement granted access to the Grand Olympiad, a competitive PvP tournament where players fought to earn Hero status.
Heroes received:
Unique weapons
Exclusive skills
Distinct visual effects
Prestige and influence within the server
The Olympiad quickly became one of the most important competitive activities in the game and remains one of Lineage II's most recognizable systems.
New Activities Beyond PvP
While high-level players focused on wars and endgame content, C4 also introduced activities for casual players.
New features included:
Fishing
Fishing allowed players to obtain:
Potions
Cosmetic items
Inventory expansion tickets
Various useful rewards
New Pets
Several new pets were introduced with their own progression systems, equipment, and maintenance requirements.
Quality-of-Life Improvements
The update also improved the user experience by adding:
Split chat windows
Improved recipe management
Better interface organization
Balance Problems Remained
Despite its many successes, C4 was not perfectly balanced.
Magic classes remained extremely powerful, and PvP balance continued to be a source of frustration for many players. NCSoft made several adjustments, but significant class disparities still existed throughout the chronicle.
Even so, these issues were often overshadowed by the sheer amount of content and memorable experiences the update delivered.
The Rise of Freeshards
One reason C4 became so influential was its connection to the growth of the private server scene.
The availability of leaked server files allowed countless private servers to appear throughout Eastern Europe and the CIS region. For many players, these servers became their first experience with MMORPGs.
Whether it was farming raid bosses, fighting outside Dion, collecting materials in Cruma Tower, or joining a first clan, countless players formed their most cherished gaming memories during the C4 era.
Why Players Remember C4 So Fondly
The popularity of C4 is not solely the result of its features.
For many players, it represents a unique period when MMORPGs still felt mysterious and unexplored. Every achievement felt meaningful, every raid was exciting, and every PvP victory carried real emotional weight.
Many veterans believe that the nostalgia surrounding C4 comes not only from the quality of the update itself but also from the unforgettable experiences of discovering Lineage II for the first time.
The packed internet cafés, discussions with friends, first clan memberships, first raid bosses, and first large-scale wars remain some of the strongest memories in gaming history.
For countless players, C4 was more than just an update—it was an era.
