In June 2004, NCSoft unveiled one of the most memorable updates in Lineage 2 history: Chronicle 2: Age of Splendor. This expansion introduced new territories, raid bosses, quests, equipment, and gameplay systems that helped shape the future of the game.

Based on translated Korean promotional materials, this article revisits how Chronicle 2 was originally presented to players and explores the major features that arrived with the update.

A World Transformed by New Power

The promotional theme of Chronicle 2 focused on the idea of a mysterious power capable of awakening hidden potential. Players were invited to embrace new possibilities and make choices that could alter their destiny.

Heine and the Lands of Innadril

One of the update's biggest additions was Heine, the capital city of Innadril.

Surrounded by lakes, forests, and vast reed fields, Innadril remained untouched by many of the wars that scarred other regions of Aden. As a result, it became one of the wealthiest territories in the kingdom.

The city showcased a unique architectural style inspired by water and nature. Its most famous landmark was the Underwater Garden, a beautiful location reflecting the culture and beliefs of its inhabitants.

Innadril was closely connected to Eva, the Goddess of Water. According to legend, Eva transformed the palace grounds into a labyrinth to protect the region from intruders, strengthening her role as the guardian deity of the land.

Devil's Isle and the Rise of Zaken

Chronicle 2 introduced players to the dark mysteries of Devil's Isle, the stronghold of the infamous pirate Zaken.

Once known as the greatest pirate on the seas, Zaken became obsessed with obtaining eternal life. His pursuit of immortality ultimately transformed him into a vampire, cursed to survive by drinking human blood.

The island became feared throughout the world, and few dared to venture there. Players could explore detailed locations including Zaken's chamber, prison areas, gates, and torture rooms hidden deep within the island.

The Tower of Insolence and Emperor Baium

Another major highlight was the Tower of Insolence, one of the most iconic locations in Lineage 2.

Originally built by Emperor Baium as the Tower of Eternity, the structure was intended to help him achieve divine power. However, the goddess Einhasad viewed his ambitions as an act of arrogance.

In response, she unleashed a devastating plague that killed the workers constructing the tower and sealed Baium at its summit.

As centuries passed, the tower became known as the Tower of Insolence. Baium was forced to witness the collapse of his empire and was ultimately transformed into a monstrous being as punishment for his hubris.

Hallate and the Lords of Death

Chronicle 2 expanded the game's lore with the introduction of Hallate, one of the Twelve Lords of Death and Darkness.

These powerful entities served the Dark Kings under agreements made with the goddess Shilen. While united under a common purpose, the Lords of Death often viewed one another as rivals and frequently competed for power.

Hallate became particularly interested in the mysteries hidden within the Tower of Insolence, believing that the answers he sought could be found within its ancient secrets.

New High-Level Quests

Whisper of Fate

Available to players who reached level 75, this quest began with a mysterious encounter involving Master Aorai.

Once a renowned blacksmith, Aorai was exiled from his guild because of his connections to demons. He tells the story of an unknown woman who commissioned the creation of an extraordinary weapon, claiming it would one day be wielded by someone destined to change the fate of the continent.

Get a Calculator

One of Chronicle 2's more unusual quests featured the eccentric blacksmith Bronk.

Bronk dreamed of traveling to the moon and claimed to have developed a revolutionary method of flight. To help him, players were tasked with locating a modern calculator needed for his calculations and experiments.

Little Wing's Big Adventure

Players wishing to evolve their dragon hatchling into a Strider needed to complete this memorable quest.

The fairy Mymyu instructed adventurers to gather sap from four magical trees. However, obtaining the sap was dangerous, as the trees emitted a deadly poison capable of killing humans.

New Weapons, Armor, and Special Abilities

Chronicle 2 significantly expanded equipment options for players.

The update introduced:

  • New C-grade weapons

  • New B-grade weapons

  • The Special Ability (SA) system

  • Updated textures for existing C-grade armor sets

  • Brand-new B-grade armor sets

These additions provided players with more customization and progression opportunities than ever before.

Monster Racing

One of the most unique features introduced in Chronicle 2 was Monster Racing.

Players could watch various monsters compete in races across a dedicated arena, placing bets and cheering for their chosen competitors. The system added a fun side activity outside of traditional leveling and PvP.

Treasure Chests

Chronicle 2 also introduced treasure chests scattered throughout the world.

Opening a chest could result in valuable rewards—or trigger an unexpected battle. This risk-versus-reward mechanic added excitement to exploration and hunting.

Legacy of Chronicle 2

Looking back, Chronicle 2: Age of Splendor was a defining moment in Lineage 2's history. The update expanded the game's world with memorable locations such as Heine, Devil's Isle, and the Tower of Insolence while introducing legendary characters like Zaken, Baium, and Hallate.

Combined with new quests, equipment, systems, and activities, Chronicle 2 helped establish many of the features that players still remember today.
