The Ancient Laboratory and Pavel Ruins are among the most mysterious locations in Lineage 2. Although several quests describe their history, much of their lore remains unknown to many players. Additional confusion comes from the similarity between the name "Pavel" and the ancient Dark Elf city mentioned in older game dialogues. Early development plans may have connected this region to the Dark Elves, but by the time the location was released, only a few Dark Elf camps remained while the entire storyline had been rewritten.
Despite these changes, the developers created one of the most detailed quest chains in Lineage 2, revealing the history of the Giants, the brilliant scientist Pavel, the Ancient Laboratory, and the rise of the infamous Doctor Chaos.
The Giants and the Ancient Laboratory
The civilization of the Giants was renowned for its scientific achievements and deep understanding of the natural world. Among their greatest discoveries was Nebulite, also known as the Star Diamond, a powerful mineral found inside meteorites. By harnessing its energy, the Giants developed advanced technologies far beyond the capabilities of modern races.
A massive mining operation was established in the crater of a fallen meteorite in what is now Schuttgart. Countless golems excavated Nebulite ore while giant engineers expanded their scientific projects.
South of the mines, the Giants constructed the Ancient Laboratory, an enormous meteorological research center led by the giant scientist Pavel. His goal was nothing less than controlling the world's climate.
Pavel's Creations
To oversee the laboratory and surrounding mines, Pavel created two highly intelligent administrator golems.
Atlanta managed the mining operations, supervised the worker golems, protected the laboratory, and coordinated the extraction of Star Diamonds.
Wendy was designed to operate the laboratory's experimental systems and assist with climate research.
The laboratory was powered by the Master of Weather, an enormous supercomputer capable of manipulating climate using combinations of rare elemental materials, including:

Together, these resources allowed the Giants to perform large-scale weather experiments unlike anything seen before.

His greatest achievement was Project No. 45 – Spring Sun.
The experiment temporarily altered the entire surrounding region into a permanent spring climate. Using the Fire of Pa'agrio as an artificial sun, the Master of Weather maintained ideal temperatures despite the natural laws of the world.
The experiment succeeded beyond expectations. Flowers covered the landscape, and Pavel often walked through the fields alongside Atlanta and Wendy, treating them not as machines but as trusted companions.
The Disaster
The success was short-lived.
A malfunction in the safety system of the laboratory's northern wing triggered a catastrophic explosion.
Without the Fire of Pa'agrio, the guardian golems lost their protective energy fields, mining golems stopped functioning, and the laboratory collapsed into chaos.
Atlanta and Wendy entered a dormant state that would last for thousands of years.
The explosion also caused a massive environmental disaster, plunging the entire region into an eternal frozen landscape.
The Story During the Events of Lineage 2
Thousands of years later, the story continues with a gifted but timid Dwarf named Kaile Dor, apprentice to Master Tarzoo.
From childhood, Kaile Dor demonstrated exceptional talent in golem construction and even assisted in creating the first siege golem.
After joining the Tower of Cruma expedition, however, his personality changed dramatically.
At the same time, Master Toma, then Elder of the Black Anvil Guild, invented a revolutionary teleportation device powered by Star Diamonds. Although no one fully understood how the device functioned, its success brought Toma immense fame.
Consumed by jealousy, Kaile Dor offered to help Toma build a new golem capable of extracting Star Diamond energy more efficiently.
The two worked together to improve Tarzoo's original siege golem designs.
The Birth of Doctor Chaos
Once the blueprints for the improved golem were complete, Kaile Dor betrayed everyone.
He stole the plans and disappeared.
Master Toma accepted responsibility for the failure, resigned from his position as guild elder, and lost the reputation he had built throughout his career.
Meanwhile, Kaile Dor was expelled from the guild.
Renaming himself Doctor Chaos, he swore revenge and set his sights on conquering the world.
Return to the Ancient Laboratory
Doctor Chaos traveled to the abandoned Ancient Laboratory, where Dwarven guilds had already resumed mining Star Diamonds in the surrounding area.
The Gray Pillar Guild had restored portions of the ancient mines, while the Bronze Key Guild had begun searching nearby ruins for forgotten Giant artifacts.
Inside the laboratory, Chaos found countless inactive and damaged golems.
Among them was Wendy, the laboratory's administrator.
Using the stolen blueprints and salvaged components from other machines, Doctor Chaos successfully restored Wendy, gaining access to the laboratory's control systems.
Through her, he reactivated parts of the ancient energy network and discovered the Master of Weather.
Spartacus and the Reactivation of the Laboratory
Knowing the Dwarves would eventually reach the laboratory, Doctor Chaos prepared for their arrival.
Using the stolen siege golem designs, he constructed a powerful combat golem named Spartacus.
To power it, he restarted the laboratory's energy systems.
This unintentionally reactivated the Master of Weather, which automatically resumed Pavel's final experiment—Project Spring Sun.
When Dwarven explorers entered the laboratory, Spartacus attacked them.
Soon afterward, the laboratory experienced another massive overload.
An explosion forced the expedition to retreat.
When they returned, they discovered that the ancient guardian golems had awakened, while the mining golems they had repaired were no longer under their control and now obeyed Doctor Chaos.
The Fire of Pa'agrio
The reactivated Master of Weather once again relied on the Fire of Pa'agrio as its primary energy source.
The ancient flame was dangerous to nearly every race except Orcs.
Doctor Chaos remained near the energy source for extended periods, and its influence gradually drove him deeper into madness.
Additional Story from the Masterwork Project
The Masterwork Project expands this storyline further.
To coordinate his growing army of combat golems, Doctor Chaos created the Transmut, a specialized computer responsible for managing golem behavior and combat protocols.
Each laboratory tower contains its own Transmut system, which automatically activates whenever intruders enter.
Researchers from the Bronze Key Guild discovered that ancient artifacts scattered throughout the laboratory could trigger various operational protocols within these systems, allowing parts of the facility to be restored and its energy flow stabilized.
Meanwhile, the site of the original explosion near the northern wing transformed into a powerful energy anomaly.
Within this crater, golems became significantly stronger and developed new abilities.
Recognizing its value, Doctor Chaos secured the area for his own research and ordered Spartacus to eliminate anyone attempting to enter.
