The Forbidden Gate is one of the most enigmatic locations in Lineage II. Following discussions about Aden Cemetery, many players began asking questions about this massive structure, its purpose, and the lands hidden beyond it. Over the years, the lore surrounding the location has changed several times, creating one of the most complex mysteries in the game's universe.

Interestingly, the location known in some localizations as the "Forbidden Gate" was originally called the Seal of Shilen. Understanding its history requires examining both the mythology of Shilen and the evolution of Lineage II's world design.

The Legend of Shilen

According to ancient legend, the goddess Shilen was seduced by her father, Gran Kain, and cast out by her mother, Einhasad. While pregnant, Shilen traveled east into a dark forest where she gave birth to six dragons along with countless monsters.

With this army, she attempted to challenge the gods but suffered a devastating defeat. Unable to accept the deaths of her children, she created death itself. Gran Kain, moved by her suffering, allowed living beings to pass into Shilen's realm after death rather than vanish completely.

Later, Emperor Shunaiman, aided by the Nephilim Army and Einhasad's messenger Anakim, defeated Shilen's followers and sealed the goddess within the underworld.

The Creation of the Seal

Early Korean descriptions explain that Emperor Shunaiman spent ten years building an enormous barrier to prevent monsters from crossing from the Holy Land of Shilen into human territories.

The structure was designed to block access completely, preventing the creatures beyond from invading Aden. However, powerful magical energy continued to seep through the seal, attracting monsters and cultists who sought to break it.

As a result, the area surrounding the gate became a gathering place for Shilen's followers, fanatics, and powerful monsters.

The Servants of Shilen

Among the most feared beings near the Seal is Messenger of Shilen Kabrio, often called the Reaper. His role is to collect wandering souls and deliver them to the underworld. Completely devoted to Shilen, Kabrio patiently waits for the day of her return.

Many creatures found around the location are described as physical manifestations of Shilen herself. These include the snake-like races Trives and Falibati, male and female serpent beings linked directly to the Goddess of Death.

Aden even features a quest involving the extermination of these creatures to conceal the truth that Shilen, once revered, had descended into madness and produced monstrous offspring.

The ruler of the Falibati is Queen Themis, one of the most powerful entities associated with Shilen. Her authority rivals that of the Lords of Death. She commands undead, demons, succubi, and other dark servants. Nearby, the priestess Hisilrome performs rituals and sacrifices in honor of Shilen while awaiting the day the seal is broken.

Elcardia and the Question of Shilen's Incarnation

One of the most confusing elements of the lore involves Elcardia, a key figure in the epic questline.

Different sources describe her as the daughter of Shilen or the embodiment of the goddess's spirit. Yet official stories state that she was born to a priestess and a knight devoted to Shilen and is never portrayed as a villain.

A 2004 trailer depicts Elcardia removing the first seal while Cain Van Holter attempts to stop her, calling her "the daughter of Shilen." This scene never appeared in the game itself and even contradicts established lore.

However, the imagery shown in the trailer closely resembles the reliefs found near the Seal of Shilen, suggesting some connection that was never fully explained.

What Lies Beyond the Gate?

One of the biggest debates concerns whether Shilen herself was sealed beneath the structure or whether the gate merely blocks access to her sacred lands.

Several early Korean and Japanese descriptions suggest that the Holy Land of Shilen lies beyond the barrier. According to these sources, the eastern territories where Shilen gave birth to the dragons were sealed off from the rest of the world.

Yet later updates introduced conflicting information. During the Goddess of Destruction era, some descriptions implied that the structure itself contained Shilen's soul.

This shift became even more apparent when the Embryo organization constructed a massive altar beneath the Seal. Led by Etis van Etina, Embryo sought to awaken Shilen by gathering sacrifices and channeling energy from catacombs and necropolises.

By this point, the lore increasingly treated the location as the actual site of Shilen's imprisonment rather than simply a gateway to her domain.

The Lost Eastern Territories

Early concept maps reveal that the area beyond the mountains was once intended to contain several major regions.

To the south lay the state of Avella, separated by the Great and Lesser Deserts of Belion. To the north were frozen lands and the mysterious Cursed Forest. Directly beyond the pass stretched a vast steppe region.

Beta versions of the game even featured a massive mountain corridor that perfectly matched these concepts. The Forbidden Gate appears to have originally been planned as a border checkpoint protecting Aden from eastern nomadic tribes rather than a magical seal.

Evidence of this early concept survived for years. Descriptions of Ravaged Castle referred to defending Aden from both Elmore in the north and Avella in the east, implying that eastern nations once existed beyond the mountains.

A Location with Three Histories

The lore of the Forbidden Gate evolved through several distinct stages:

  1. A strategic mountain pass protecting Aden from eastern kingdoms and nomadic tribes.

  2. A magical barrier preventing Shilen's monsters from invading human lands.

  3. The actual prison of Shilen, where the goddess herself was sealed.

Because older descriptions were never fully removed, all three interpretations coexisted for years, creating contradictions throughout official sources.

Conclusion

The Forbidden Gate remains one of the most fascinating mysteries in Lineage II. Whether viewed as a military frontier, a seal protecting the world from monstrous invasions, or the prison of the Goddess of Death herself, the location showcases the layered and often contradictory storytelling that defines the game's lore.

Its changing role over the years reflects how Lineage II's world evolved during development, leaving behind fragments of abandoned ideas that continue to fuel discussion among lore enthusiasts today.
