Rare items have always been part of MMORPG history, but few have a story as extraordinary as the Sword of Life. Unlike legendary equipment known for its power alone, this unique weapon became famous because it symbolized real-life heroism before later becoming the center of one of the biggest scandals in Korean online gaming.
A Sword Born From Saving a Life
In 2001, three years after Lineage launched in South Korea, the game had become much more than an MMORPG. It served as a social platform where thousands of players communicated, formed friendships, and helped one another beyond the game itself.
On August 31, 2001, a 33-year-old woman was hospitalized in Incheon after suffering severe complications following a cesarean section. She urgently needed a blood transfusion, but her blood type—O negative—was extremely rare in Korea.
After exhausting every personal contact, her family made an unusual decision. They turned to the Lineage community for help. A message requesting a blood donor quickly spread across the game's forums and all 48 game servers after NCSoft administrators broadcast the emergency to players.
More than 100,000 players responded. Soon, three local Lineage players with the matching blood type arrived at the hospital, and the woman's life was saved.
The event became national news in South Korea and demonstrated the strength of the game's community.
The Creation of the Sword of Life
To honor the player who donated blood, NCSoft created a one-of-a-kind in-game weapon called the Sword of Life.
At the time, it ranked among the strongest swords in the game, surpassed only by a handful of legendary weapons. More importantly, it represented a real act of compassion rather than simply being another rare collectible.
Eventually, the original owner retired from Lineage and sold the weapon to another collector. For years, the item disappeared from public view, becoming little more than a legend remembered by longtime players.
The Weapon Returns
In December 2015, NCSoft updated several classic weapons as part of its Vintage Project. During this update, the Sword of Life was transformed into the Dagger of Life, complete with improved appearance and updated statistics.
Many believed the item had vanished forever until its owner unexpectedly discovered it sitting in storage after years of inactivity.
Because of its rarity and exceptional stats, collectors valued the weapon at approximately 45 million Korean won, making it one of the most valuable virtual items in the game.
A Multi-Million Won Scam
The owner decided to sell the legendary weapon through a real-money transaction. However, after completing the trade, he received a fake payment confirmation message and realized he had been scammed.
Attempts to recover the item through NCSoft and local authorities initially failed. The investigation stalled after the scammer used foreign phone registration and left little trace behind.
Months later, the unique Dagger of Life unexpectedly appeared in the hands of a popular Korean streamer. As players questioned its origin, conflicting stories emerged involving multiple streamers, brokers, and traders.
NCSoft's investigation revealed that the stolen weapon had passed through six different accounts before reaching its newest owner. The complex chain of transactions involved real-money sales, intermediaries, upgraded enchantments, and rapidly increasing prices.
The Investigation and Resolution
As evidence accumulated, one of the brokers admitted participating in the transaction and agreed to compensate those involved financially. The legendary weapon was eventually returned to its rightful owner, while the buyer recovered the money spent on the purchase.
Although many questions remained unanswered, the Korean Lineage community generally considered the outcome fair because the original owner recovered the item and the innocent buyer was reimbursed.
A Legendary Story Beyond the Game
The Sword of Life remains one of the most remarkable stories in MMORPG history. It began as a symbol of kindness when thousands of players united to save a stranger's life, only to become the focus of one of Lineage's most famous real-money trading scandals years later.
Its legacy reminds players that sometimes the greatest stories in online games are created not by developers, but by the communities themselves.
