Freya is one of the most memorable raid bosses in Lineage 2, but her story began long before the update that introduced her. Hidden within the quests of the Frozen Labyrinth and expanded in later chronicles, her tale is one of political betrayal, forbidden power, loyalty, and sacrifice.
Princess Melissa's Exile
Princess Melissa, a talented and beloved member of the Elmoreden royal family, became the victim of a political conspiracy. Falsely accused of practicing dark magic, she was exiled from the imperial court. Loyal knights of the Kanna Order, along with her servant Sirra, followed her into exile, where Melissa settled in a magnificent palace within the Summer Labyrinth.
There, a mysterious sage named Cyan appeared with a magical crystal containing immense ice magic. When the crystal accidentally shattered, its power infected Melissa while fragments scattered throughout the labyrinth. What seemed like an accident was later revealed to be part of a far greater plan.
The Birth of the Ice Queen
As the crystal's influence grew, Melissa gradually transformed into Freya, an icy spirit obsessed with preserving beauty forever. Her compassion disappeared, replaced by cruelty and an overwhelming desire to freeze the world around her.
The once-beautiful Summer Labyrinth became the Frozen Labyrinth, while Melissa's loyal followers suffered terrible fates. Sirra was transformed into the guardian of the frozen garden, and many knights became frozen monsters or gargoyles. Those who remained loyal eventually formed the Zinnia Guild, dedicating themselves to freeing Melissa from Freya's control.
The Zinnia Guild's Mission
For generations, the Zinnia Guild searched for a way to save the princess. Players assist the guild by collecting crystal fragments, uncovering ancient records, and discovering the Divine Sword once carried by the Knights of Kanna. The guild believed Melissa's true soul still existed beneath Freya's corruption and could be restored.
Sirra's Betrayal
Although Sirra initially appeared to help the guild, she revealed her true intentions during the final battle. After players weakened Freya and the Ice Queen was defeated, Sirra absorbed Freya's spirit, becoming the new Ice Queen herself. What seemed to be a mission to save Melissa ultimately ended in betrayal.
The Story's Hidden Ending
Later versions of Lineage 2 quietly hint at the conclusion of Freya's story. Players can obtain the Flower of Zinnia, a symbol that Melissa's memories and humanity briefly resurfaced before the end. Whether this represents Melissa's final redemption or simply another interpretation of the story remains unclear.
Despite its emotional depth, the conclusion received little attention in-game, leaving one of Lineage 2's most compelling storylines without the cinematic ending many players expected. For fans of the game's lore, however, Freya's tale remains one of the greatest tragedies in the world of Aden.
