Among the many legends of Lineage 2, few are as dark and unforgettable as the story of Zaken and Devil’s Isle. It is a tale of wealth, greed, betrayal, forbidden immortality, and a pirate king whose quest for eternal life transformed him into one of the game's most feared undead rulers.
The Rise of the Pirate King
After years of war and devastation, the southern lands gradually recovered. Trade flourished once again, with merchant ships sailing along the southern coast and the ports of Giran and Heine becoming thriving centers of commerce.
The prosperity attracted countless pirates. Merchant vessels carrying valuable cargo became easy targets, and the southern seas quickly earned a reputation for danger.
Among all pirate captains, one name inspired the greatest fear—Zaken.
A brilliant swordsman and unmatched navigator, Zaken dominated the seas so completely that he became known as the Pirate King. Only another notorious pirate captain, Leon, dared challenge his authority.
The Hidden Base on Devil’s Isle
To protect his growing fortune, Zaken established a secret base on a rocky island south of Giran. Hidden within its cliffs was a secluded harbor large enough to conceal an entire ship.
While settling the island, the pirates encountered remnants of ancient demonic forces left behind after Beleth's defeat. Among them were powerful demons, sleeping servants, and the sorceress Kinishi, who possessed knowledge of an extraordinary secret—the Giants' method of achieving immortality hidden deep within the Tower of Cruma.
From that moment, wealth no longer satisfied Zaken.
His only desire became eternal life.
The Search for Immortality
Determined to uncover the Giants' secret, Zaken ordered the construction of a hidden underground tunnel connecting the island to the sea. Captured slaves were forced to excavate the passage, while deadly traps were installed to prevent intruders from discovering the secret entrance.
Once construction was complete, Zaken murdered every slave and worker involved, ensuring no one could reveal the tunnel's existence.
He then gathered his remaining crew and sailed toward the Tower of Cruma in search of the Giants' legendary artifact.
A Captain Consumed by Obsession
As the journey continued, Zaken became increasingly obsessed with immortality. His growing paranoia and cruelty slowly destroyed the loyalty of his crew.
Anyone suspected of questioning his authority was immediately executed by his ruthless executioner, Krantz, known among the pirates as "The Butcher."
Eventually, Zaken succeeded in obtaining the ancient Giants' legacy and prepared to return home.
Betrayal Begins
While the pirate ship was anchored in Heine, Zaken's loyal boatswain, Muska, fell in love with a woman named Fatima.
Fatima manipulated Muska into betraying his captain and stealing a portion of Zaken's treasure. Blinded by love, Muska fled to Alligator Island, where he secretly buried the stolen riches.
Unknown to almost everyone, however, this represented only a fraction of the Pirate King's true fortune.
The Crew's Rebellion
Only Zaken knew the location of his greatest treasure.
When he eventually shared its location with his first mate, Leon, greed took hold.
Leon secretly organized a mutiny. Upon returning to Devil's Isle, the pirates turned against their captain in an attempt to seize both the Giants' legacy and Zaken's hidden wealth.
Ironically, Zaken was executed by Krantz—the very executioner who had faithfully carried out his captain's brutal orders for years.
His own crew abandoned his body and stranded the pirate ship inside the island's hidden grotto.
The Price of Eternal Life
Moments before dying, Zaken activated the Giants' artifact, believing it would grant him true immortality.
Instead, he became the victim of Kinishi's deception.
The ancient secret did indeed provide eternal life—but not as a living man.
Zaken awakened as an immortal undead vampire.
His soul had been sacrificed to secure Kinishi's own immortality through dark magic.
The Birth of the Vampire King
Driven mad by betrayal and his horrific transformation, Zaken hunted down everyone responsible for the mutiny.
Leon was the first to die.
Krantz and the remaining pirates soon followed.
Immortality came with terrible consequences. Zaken developed an uncontrollable thirst for human blood, becoming a powerful vampire. From a distance he still appeared human, but up close his undead nature became unmistakable.
His strength increased dramatically after sunset, and even fatal wounds healed with astonishing speed.
The Curse of Devil’s Isle
Realizing Kinishi had deceived him, Zaken killed and cursed her. However, her mastery of dark magic prevented true death, leaving her trapped forever as a ghost.
Zaken then resurrected many of his former companions as undead servants.
Leon was condemned to kill every intruder who entered the island.
Krantz swore eternal loyalty and dedicated himself to guarding the Pirate King's treasure.
Still unwilling to trust those who had once betrayed him, Zaken also summoned an ancient Giant guardian discovered through the Giants' legacy, accompanied by powerful protectors to defend the island forever.
The Fall of Rival Pirates
News of Zaken's disappearance quickly spread across the southern seas.
His greatest rival, Captain Kilo, assembled a crew and sailed to Devil's Isle hoping to claim the Pirate King's legendary treasure.
The expedition ended in disaster.
Zaken and his undead guardians annihilated the invaders. Kilo himself died, only to be resurrected by Zaken's curse as another immortal undead, forever consumed by hatred and a desire for revenge.
Muska's Lost Treasure
Meanwhile, Muska returned from Alligator Island carrying a map marking the location of the treasure he had stolen.
Trusting Fatima once again proved fatal.
After obtaining the map, she poisoned Muska and left him to die.
Yet Muska had anticipated betrayal.
The treasure map was encrypted using secret pirate symbols that only pirates could understand.
When news spread that Zaken and his crew had perished, no one remained capable of deciphering the map.
Desperate for the hidden riches, Fatima sent her new lover—a simple tailor—to Devil's Isle in search of the treasure.
He disappeared without a trace.
The Legend Lives On
Over time, the abandoned pirate fortress became known as Devil's Isle.
Protected by undead pirates, cursed guardians, demons, and ancient creatures, the island became one of the most feared places in the world of Lineage 2.
Deep within its hidden grotto, Zaken remains imprisoned alongside his unimaginable fortune. Although he achieved the immortality he desperately sought, it came at the ultimate price.
Instead of becoming an eternal king, Zaken became an undead vampire forever bound to Devil's Isle, cursed to guard his treasure while endlessly suffering from an insatiable thirst for human blood.
