The Sea of Spores is one of the most unusual and visually distinctive locations in the world of Lineage 2. Hidden beneath its eerie white landscape lies the story of a devastating war, forbidden magic, and one of the game's legendary epic bosses—Orfen. What was once a thriving forest protected by powerful guardians eventually became a lifeless wasteland filled with toxic spores, mutated creatures, and restless undead.

The Creation of the Forest Guardians

After the creation of the World Tree, the goddess Einhasad breathed the spirits of the elements into its surroundings, giving birth to several magical races.

  • Ents were created from young trees and embodied the spirit of the earth.

  • Fairies emerged from butterflies blessed with the spirit of the wind.

  • Spiders were born from creatures living beneath the World Tree, infused with the spirit of fire.

  • Arachnes, intelligent spider-like beings, became the forest's devoted guardians.

Among the Arachnes were three sisters:

  • Nirupa, guardian of the thread of the present.

  • Horne, keeper of the thread of the past.

  • Orfen, weaver of the thread of the future.

According to ancient beliefs, these sisters literally wove the fate of the world through their enchanted threads.

Nirupa later formed a sacred pact with the World Tree, gaining immortality in exchange for protecting it forever. Together with the Fairy Queen, she guarded the Elven Forest against any threat.

The War Between Elves and Humans

Following the fall of the Giants' civilization, the Elves united the races and became rulers of the continent. However, their dominance did not last.

After defeating the Orcs with the help of humans, the Elves made a critical mistake—they shared the secrets of their powerful magic with their allies.

Eventually, humanity betrayed them.

The former allies launched a massive invasion, forcing the Elves to retreat into the great forests where their magic was strongest. Their final hope rested on the protection of the ancient giant turtle Cruma, the last survivor of its species.

Orfen's Desperate Spell

As the war reached its climax, Orfen attempted to stop the bloodshed.

Instead, she became trapped in the middle of the battle and suffered severe injuries.

Facing certain defeat, she unleashed an incredibly powerful magical spell across the entire battlefield.

Cruma sacrificed herself by absorbing much of the devastating attack, buying enough time for many Elves to escape. The giant turtle was mortally wounded and died where she fell, marking the end of her noble lineage.

Unfortunately, Orfen's magic destroyed everything within its reach—including the sacred World Tree itself.

The Birth of the Sea of Spores

The consequences of Orfen's spell were catastrophic.

The once-living forest became a white, lifeless wasteland.

The overwhelming magical energy permanently corrupted the land, causing:

  • Giant mutated mushrooms to spread across the region.

  • Insects to grow into monstrous creatures.

  • Fallen soldiers from both armies to rise as undead.

  • Toxic spores to poison the surrounding environment.

  • The ecosystem to collapse entirely.

This cursed land would become known as the Sea of Spores.

The Mystery of Cruma's Shell

Early lore suggested that the remains of Cruma's shell could still be found throughout the Sea of Spores.

Although many shell-like structures appear across the zone, later analysis of the Korean and Japanese game files revealed that these objects are actually giant insect shells rather than Cruma's remains.

The legendary shell of the great turtle was never officially added to the game, making it one of Lineage 2's long-standing mysteries.

Orfen Awakens

Centuries passed, but the Sea of Spores remained a cursed wasteland.

The toxic environment continued producing mutated fungi and poisonous spores that slowly spread across the continent.

Eventually, Orfen awakened.

When she saw what had become of the beautiful forest she once protected, she was consumed by madness.

Poisoned by centuries of corruption, Orfen lost her sanity and began attacking anyone who entered her territory—human or elf alike.

Driven by insanity, she sought to drain the blood of her victims and weave endless threads that would eventually cover the entire world in a vast web.

Containing the Corruption

The growing danger forced the Elves and the mages of the Ivory Tower to cooperate.

Around the fifth century of the Imperial Era, they constructed magical towers surrounding the Sea of Spores and created an enormous barrier designed to contain the spreading corruption.

Although the barrier successfully prevented the swamp from expanding, it was never completely perfect.

Poisonous spores occasionally escaped on the wind, requiring constant maintenance by specially appointed guardians and magical expeditions.

Many of these expeditions disappeared without a trace.

Legends Within the Sea of Spores

Over the centuries, numerous stories emerged from the cursed region.

One famous tale tells of the knight Crain, who lost his beloved during an expedition into the Sea of Spores after an ambush by Orfen. Becoming immortal, he continues wandering the cursed forest in search of revenge.

Other expeditions fell victim to a corrupted ancient tree serving Orfen, while her intelligent servant Ribu searched for weaknesses in the magical barrier protecting the outside world.

Orfen herself roamed the Sea of Spores alongside her followers, attacking anyone who crossed into her domain while continuing to weave the "threads of the future" in pursuit of her terrifying vision.

Connections to In-Game Quests

The Sea of Spores plays an important role in numerous Lineage 2 quests.

Players encounter:

  • Elven rangers infected by the region's deadly spores.

  • Investigations into the mysterious decline of the World Tree.

  • Missing knights who vanish while exploring the cursed forest.

  • Expeditions launched by the Ivory Tower to maintain the magical barrier.

  • Survivors whose stories reveal the lingering consequences of the ancient war.

These quests help connect the game's present-day events with the ancient tragedy that shaped one of Lineage 2's darkest locations.

A Forest Forever Lost

Although the barrier continues to keep most of the corruption contained, the Sea of Spores remains one of the most dangerous places in Aden.

Its poisonous atmosphere, mutated wildlife, undead soldiers, and the ever-watchful Orfen serve as lasting reminders of a single catastrophic battle—one that destroyed a sacred forest and forever changed the history of Lineage 2.

Today, adventurers who challenge the epic boss Orfen are not merely facing a powerful monster; they are confronting the tragic guardian of a paradise lost, whose desperate attempt to end a war ultimately created one of the world's greatest disasters.
